What is CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership established directly between farmer and consumer.  The CSA concept has become a popular way for customers to purchase fresh, locally grown produce in-season.  The consumer provides a pre-season investment to purchase a membership.  The grower uses this investment to plant, grow and harvest the crops.  Once harvest begins, the farmer is committed to providing members with a weekly box of fresh fruits and vegetables that are hand selected for quality and picked at the peak of ripeness and flavor.

Delmarva Proud
Fifer Orchards celebrates the heritage of growing fresh fruits and vegetables here on the Delmarva Peninsula. The fertile soils, moderate climate and fresh water supply of our peninsula make it a uniquely ideal environment for harvesting high quality produce.

Delmarva was the main source of fruits and vegetables for the Mid-Atlantic region in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  There were over 500 canneries on the peninsula in those days.  Strawberries, raspberries, cherries, peaches, apples, pears, tomatoes, peas, string beans, Lima beans, cucumbers, sweet corn and pumpkins were all prominently grown.

DYK? Sussex County, DE was the largest strawberry producing county in the nation in 1900.  Delaware was also the #1 peach producing state in the 1890’s. delmarva3

A new generation of farmer is focused on renewing the legacy of Delmarva fresh produce. Fifer’s is focused on growing high quality fruits and veggies through a sustainable approach that is safe, delicious and nutritious for our family and our community.  Tomatoes, squash, peppers, potatoes, eggplant, asparagus, spinach, scallions, radishes, beets, cabbage, beans, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, greens, lettuce, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, blueberries, strawberries, watermelons, peaches, apples and many other crops continue to be very well suited for Delmarva’s long growing season.

Our ‘local foodshed’ provides a unique cuisine and a bountiful variety of foods from the waterman, farmers and ranchers of the peninsula. Crabs, rockfish, oysters, clams, and other seafood are harvested from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Bay and our numerous rivers. Eggs, chicken, beef, pork, turkey, and bison are also raised on Delmarva farms.

The peninsula also features a symphonic blend of tidal marsh, farmland, cypress swamp, and coastal plain forest. These diverse ecosystems provide habitat for more than 100 species of mammals, 400 birds, 70 reptiles and amphibians, 60 butterflies, and thousands of aquatic and terrestrial animals and plants. Wild turkeys, bald eagles, falcons, hawks, fox, turtles, owls, deer, beaver, otter, raccoon, squirrel, seals, frogs, rabbits, and so many other wild animals share Delmarva with us.

Our 4th generation family farm is passionate about growing and consuming fresh, local fruits and vegetables on the peninsula we call home.  We enjoy the challenge of growing the crops, the experience of sharing the harvest with our family and community and working with our ‘food neighbors’ that help us add variety to our CSA box each week.   We hope you’ll share the journey of our CSA program this spring and summer.  It will certainly be Delmarva-lous!

What’s the excitement about?
Our ‘Delmarva Box’ CSA provides an adventure each week.  Folks enjoy the anticipation and excitement that the weekly produce box can provide as they discover new favorite fruits and vegetables.  You’ll find that your weekly produce box will provide a fun and rewarding family experience in your kitchen as you prepare food together and appreciate new flavors and old favorites.

CSA commitment
You’ll need to be committed to picking up your share each week if you choose to become a member.  You’ll also need to have a desire to experiment in the kitchen a bit.  CSA’s are most enjoyed by individuals and families that enjoy cooking, trying new things and have an interest in healthy, fresh, quality food.   The only member responsibility is to pick up your ‘Delmarva Box’ each week at the designated time and enjoy!

What if I’m out of town?  Members are encouraged to send a guest to pick up their share box any given week.  This is a great way to share the harvest with your family members, neighbors or friends who are not currently CSA members.   If a share is not picked up at all, it will automatically be donated to the Food Bank of Delaware.
In 2015, over 50,000 lbs. of fruits and vegetables were donated to local Food Banks, the Salvation Army, Shepard’s Place and other important outreach groups.

What’s in the box each week?
Our sustainable, 4th generation family farm grows a wide selection of both fruit and vegetables which enables us to offer tremendous variety in each CSA box.  Each produce box will keep your senses dazzled with beautiful colors and flavors throughout the season.  The recyclable box will be filled with a mix of produce that is hand selected by Fifer Orchards each week.   For even greater selection, we partner with other local family farms and food artisans.

Substitutions are not available with our boxes so that everyone will receive the same value.  Please browse the numerous images in the slide show at the top of the page or visit our Pinterest CSA gallery.  This will give you a visual idea of the box contents throughout the growing season.

Don’t forget to join our special Fifer CSA Facebook page where you’ll find a ‘produce preview’ on Monday of each week.  This page is also a great forum to connect with other members as they share recipe ideas, pictures and experiences.

Weekly add-on upgrades
Looking for extra goodies to compliment your fruits and vegetables?  Each week, members are given the opportunity to select à la carte items via the member online store. Simply login to your member account and shop the items that are updated weekly in the store.  Examples may include: local honey, apple butter, local cheeses, pickles, meats, eggs and other local food items. You’ll also find seasonal bulk produce specials when crops are plentiful. Our CSA members can truly and directly connect to their ‘local foodshed’ through partnerships that Fifer Orchards has built with other local businesses.
