Asparagus - The Gourmet Vegetable
The Asparagus season starts in late April and lasts into early June.
Asparagus is a member of the Lily family. It is native to the Mediterranean area of southern Europe.
It’s best to eat asparagus the day you buy it, but it will keep for four to five days if refrigerated. To keep asparagus fresh at home, put the spears (cut side down) in an inch of water and refrigerate.
There are three varieties of Asparagus-green, purple, and white. Asparagus is a good source of Vitamin C, which helps your body fight infection, and Potassium, which helps your muscles work. It also contains phytochemicals, which are natural substances in plants that help keep your body healthy.
Asparagus has no fat, contains no cholesterol, and is low in sodium.
